Rob Bowman, Jamie Forrester and Noel Whelan had all contributed to England's success in the European Under 18 Youth Championship, which had climaxed with a 1-0 win over Turkey the previous day at the City Ground, Nottingham. While Kevin Sharp and Mark Tinkler had played in all four games of the Championship, the trio had only had limited exposure other than token involvement in the latter stages of some of the games. So the game provided a good work-out for them. It was Noel Whelan, who rose to meet a first time cross from Andy Couzens, with a bullet-like header to win the game for Leeds in the sixty-fifth minute, after Matthew Smithard had been prominent in the build up to Couzens' cross. It was no more than they deserved after a Steve Tobin free-kick had cannoned back off the woodwork in the first minute and Jamie Forrester had headed against the crossbar minutes before Whelan's strike. Mark Humphries replaced Simon Oliver at Left Back in the sixty-second minute before there was a triple substitution in the seventy-ninth minute as Paul Wharton replaced Mark Ford at Right Half, Jason Blunt replaced Matthew Smithard at Outside Right and Gary Lynam came on for Steve Tobin at Outside Left. Goalkeeper Paul Pettinger remained unused on the bench.
